Which tobacco smells the best?
Posted by Jo on Saturday, 22-Sep-2007
My husband quit smoking twenty five years ago. He sometimes complains about the smell of the different types of cigarettes that I smoke.
I like a mild virginia type of smoke. What is the best smelling tube and tobacco when they are lit? I ordered some tubes that were blueberry but he didn't like that smell.

Aromatic pipe tobaccos will haunt your taste buds for quite a period of time if inhaled. I have no experience with Lane MV-1000 and am curious as to where you got it. I've hardly mixed any pipe/cigarette tobacco combos and am by no means an authority but I'd recommend trying some straight tobacco like Samuel Gawith's Best Brown Flake.
The best place I know of for bulk pipe tobacco is...

The best place for tinned pipe tobacco is...

P.S. ...take a gander at some of the BEAUTIFUL pipes at smokingpipes.com. If only I had the $500 and up that some of them cost. ( I do own a nice sandblasted Rad Davis though. Call it a guilty pleasure.)

I got the MV from Lil' Brown (bulk tobacco section IIRC). I was trying to find the plainest Virginia pipe tobacco I could, that one wasn't. It has possibilities as a flavoring in a blend. I had something real interesting but it was made from leftovers and damn if I know what was in it.

The purest and plainest Virginia I can think of is Wessex's Gold Brick Virginia Plug. It's a very labor intensive and fun tobacco. You need a really sharp knife in order to get it into smokable pieces; or you could peel the layers of leaf and use a pair of shears. Great in a pipe, haven't tried it in cigarettes.
Very pricey at $11.33 for 100g.

I was mostly curious because folks using pipe tobacco in cigarettes had come up a couple of times. I hadn't realized how different pipe tobacco could be. It seems that, even in a best case scenario, its not ideal for cigarettes or stuffing.

I don't know as the tube makes a whole lot of difference but you might try the Tobacco Stations American mild. I smoke it in a Smokers Gold light tube and it leaves a real pleasant room aroma. I don't know why but I don't find the same thing with their premium mild tobacco.
