Taxes on Internet sales

I've found complaints on other sites of people getting tax bills from their state for on--line cigarette purchases. Dealers have been required to provide information on sales to some state authorities. In Michigan, for instance, one person complained of being threatened with a %500 penalty if the due taxes weren't paid in a timely manner. How long before they come after us?
Folks, this Gestapo like terror campaign is getting out of hand. We are rapidly approaching the end of life as we have known it all our lives. America, home of the brave, and land of the free? Those who fail to learn from History are destined to repeat it! Capt Mike

@Kapitan U96: I've heard apocryphal stories about this, but always in the context of people ordering pre-made-factory smokes from some Indian casino.

It's definitely not out of the realm of possibility that the State Authorities will take the remaining smokers into "financial protective custody" for 'the Children', though.
The insanity of Leftism and collectivism continues to baffle me every day.
How long until they come after us?
How do you know they aren't already onto ya, Mein Kapitan?
I'd have to say that mention of the GeSTAPO might be a bit premature, but all that insatiable government greed for tobacco revenue IS being spent on something.
We have the right to roll our own damn cigs, FFS.
I'm going to use all the money I'm not paying to the leech-government, invest most of it, then splurge on quality guns and ammo for myself.
I too, love the good old USA, but the caliber of the idiots pretending they can run it's government leaves a lot to be desired.

I've mentioned this in the distant past. NY State was engaged in a vicious trend of 'trying' to collect sales tax on Internet Cigarette Sales, especially in regard to it's many Indian Reservations. (Yes NY State has Indian Reservations :)

Ultimately they just stopped because of the public outcry. I suspect that there was something more involved that wasn't being public presented since the State of New York is so tax happy they would sell their own mothers for a nickel.
However as I recall, this was limited to purely Cigarette Sales, not MYO sales. Reference the NY Post & the NY Daily News over the last year for more detailed info.

If states request it, the sellers have to provide invoices. Usually based on $ per oz.

Supporting documentation please. It sounds like you are talking about state OTP (other tobacco products) business excise taxes (pdf rate chart, pdf map) which are more often a cost plus percentage (federal is 6.86¢/oz.). TTBOMK, Cigarettes are taxed on the retail/sales tax level, OTP on the business/excise tax level (plus standard sales tax at the retail level).

...INAL, but I don't see how the states could go after the consumer for a business tax. I believe that the only current threat is sales tax and that affects all Internet sales.
