How to calibrate a hygrometer?

Posted by Kerry on Wednesday, 09-Apr-2008

I don't have an answer. I was just thinking that many of us use them, in one form or another, but none of us seem to know how to calibrate one.

Seems there should be some way to do this and I would hope there is a way for the average person to do it and get reasonably consistent results.

Another thought is that some hygrometers may not actually be measuring the same thing as others. Some may be, in essence, measuring RH and others may be giving a figure more closely related to the dew point.

Any ideas?

P.S.

I am hoping for a relatively simple way to do this. Not looking for the technical absolute, but something that the everyday Joe can do to be sure his hygrometer is at least nearly accurate and mostly, consistent.

I helped bubba publish a comprehensive Humidification & Storage FAQ in the RYO Revolution Forums. One of the sections is about Hygrometers, including 2 mentods of calibration (Damp Towel and Damp Salt).
